US, January 28, 2008 - It's a first-person shooter in a sci-fi world with squad mechanics built on the Unreal Engine 3. If that basic description sounds run of the mill to you, we wouldn't be surprised. That seems to describe any number of upcoming or recently released games. However, you might want to take a deeper look before you write off Tiberium as another standard shooter. A little over a year from now, EA LA will bring the Command & Conquer series into the first-person once again, bringing with it the full force of the C&C story and mythology.
Tiberium continues the tale of the Nod and GDI struggle for control of Earth and the title material where it left off at the end of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. If you haven't been following the story, don't worry. It's easy to catch up. Tiberium was found on earth, a radioactive and quickly replicating material. The catch is that it is also an incredible energy source, so naturally the controlling GDI and religious Nod go to war over it. C&C 3: Tiberium Wars ends with the introduction of the Scrin, an alien race that also has eyes for the fictional mineral

This entry into the franchise tells the story of Ricardo Vega. This trooper fought in the third war for the GDI and was instrumental in securing victory during the initial battles against the Scrin. After the war, he leaves GDI and takes up residence in one of the yellow zones, areas of the earth with moderate tiberium infestation. Eleven years later he is called back to war at Tower Omega.
The war with the Scrin is far from over. This is where Tiberium begins.
Awesome guns are a necessity in first-person shooters and this is one place Tiberium sets itself apart from the pack. The game eschews weapon management in favor of one all purpose gun, the GD10. This beast is designed to be the rock, paper and scissors according to Chris Plummer, Executive Producer at EA LA. Instead of forcing you to make decisions regarding which weapons to carry in hopes of having the best tool in hand when a fight breaks out, EA is giving you one weapon that can transform to meet your needs. The four different forms of the GD10 offer up everything from an assault rifle to a surface to air missile launcher (complete with the ability to lock-on to up to four targets at once). The grenade launcher was our favorite tool of destruction on display. Once fired, holding down the trigger activates a gravity pulse that allows you to roll and direct the grenade once it hits the ground. Enemies hiding behind cover don't stand a chance against this novelty.

Even in the pre-alpha stage, Tiberium looks and sounds pretty good even if the art style is a bit sci-fi generic. Smoke trails and clouds are interactive -- we watched a grenade's shock wave push a smoke cloud quite realistically. We watched as the game seamlessly streamed from an indoor area into a massive outdoor landscape. In short, the game is already showing that Unreal Engine sheen we've come to expect.
Erik Kraber, Tiberium's Audio Director, took the stage during the presentation to show off the Adaptive Surround eXperience. ASX analyzes the game moment to moment and then uses AI to decide which sound effects to accentuate, which to dampen from occlusion, and which layers to include in the score. EA LA hopes that using this in-house developed sound system will take the audio experience to the next level in terms of immersion.
Tiberium has been in the works for roughly two and a half years and it still has a ways to go before it reaches its 2009 release window
